World Champions 2010, Spain beat Netherlands 1-0 |
|
Spain scored the one crucial goal deep into extra time after a goalless 90 minutes to win The World Cup 2010. Holland were brutal opponents and were very lucky to go into half-time with all eleven players still on the pitch. With over half the team yellow-carded, Holland had to be more careful with their tackles in the second half. Nevertheless, the closest England came to representation in the Final was referee Howard Webb who dished out 14 yellows and a red by the time proceedings came to a close after 125 minutes of football. Spain always looked the better footballing side. That said, in a frenetic second half, Holland's Robben came so close to scoring after being one-on-one with the Spanish goalkeeper, whose errant leg managed to deflect the shot. But the goal that mattered was scored by Iniesta who showed great skill and control to fire home after 27 minutes of the 30-minute extra-time period. That was the moment that the European Champions became World Champions, and the first European team to win a World Cup outside if Europe. Iniesta saved the tournament, and his country, from the indignity of a penalty shootout, an end that would surely have left the World Cup with a bitter taste in the mouth; it would have been nothing more than a grotesque coin toss. Spain are also the first team to win the World Cup after losing the first game of the Finals as Spain were beaten 1-0 by Switzerland in their first match in South Africa. Before that slip-up, Spain had been vying for favouritism in the betting to lift the World Cup trophy with ultimate under-achievers Brazil. However as time went on they found their form and made the conquerors of hopeless England, Germany, look very pedestrian on their way to this famous victory.
